Stidies on Detoxicating Effects of Traditional Drug Extracts against the Polychlorinated Biphenyls Toxicity

Abstract
Detoxicating effects of extracts of traditional drugs, i.e., Rheum traguticum(R.T.), Gardenja jasminoides(G.J.) and Artemisia capillaris(A.C.), on rats administered toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were examined by analyzing body and liver weight, measuring hemoglobin content in blood, cholesterol and total lipid levels in serum, enzyme activites of GOT, GPT and ALP in serum, the changes of the plasma concentration of PCBs in rabbits.
The following results were obtained
1. In comparison with that rats only fed with PCBs showed 11.7£¥ decrease of body weight and 5.82£¥ increase of liver weight, those administered PCBs and extracts showed increase of 18.6£¥ in A.C. extracts, 19.5£¥ in R.T. extracts and 19.8£¥ in G.J. extracts in body weight and decrease of 4.61£¥ in R.T. extracts, 4.94£¥ in G.J. extracts and 5.06£¥ in A.C. extracts in liver weight.
2. While the hemoglobin content in rats fed only PCBs decreased to 11.97g/dl, those in rats administered PCBs and extracts increased to 14.00g/dl in A.C. extracts, 13.52g/dl in G.J., extracts and 12.93g/dl in R.T.extracts.
3. In comparison with that rats fed with PCBs showed increase of cholesterol and total lipid levels in serum to 78.5mg/dl and 243.8mg/dl, those administered of those PCBs and extracts showed significant decrease to 49.3mg/dl and 166.8mg/dl in R.T. extracts, 58.1mg/dl and 167.5mg/dl in G.J. extracts and 62.1mg/dl and 184.5mg/dl in A.C. extracts.
4. While the serum enzyme activities of GOT, GPT and ALP in rats fed PCBs were increased to 80.2 unit, 84.7 unit and 32.7 KA unit, those in rats fed PCBs and extracts were decreased to 46.2 unit, 42.3 unit and 22.9 KA unit in R.T. extracts, 53.0 unit, 43.9 unit and 19.2 KA unit in G.J. extracts and 55.6 unit, 50.2 unit and 23.1 KA unit in A.C. extracts.
5.The changes of the plasma concentration of PCBs in rabbits showed two types when adiminsitered PCBs. By administration of PCBs and extracts, the plasma concentration of PCBs decreased gradually.
As the experimental results, we could summarize these drug extracts had protecting and recovering effects on rats damaged with PCBs. Especially, Rheum tanguticum extracts showed significant effect.
